Lantern Awards

Public Relations Professionals
Emerald Coast Public Relations Organization (ECPRO) is a professional organization that fosters an interest in the public relations field; encourages professional development for those employed in the public relations field; maintains a high degree of standards and ethics in the performance of public relations tasks; offers instruction for accreditation. ECPRO was formed in 1992 and is a member of the Southern Public Relations Federation (SPRF). A listing of past ECPRO presidents can be found by clicking here.

ECPRO members are civic minded and contribute to the local community in a number of ways. One of the organization’s main endeavors is the sponsorship of the Student Public Relations and Media Competition for students in Okaloosa and Walton counties. A foundation has been established to accept tax deductible donations/sponsorships. For more information about the competition click here.

Announcements

Congratulations to the winners of the 2009 Student Public Relations and Media Competition.

Shown above in the left photo is Freeport High School student Madison Lewis, who was recognized as the outstanding yearbook editor with a $500 scholarship.

In the middle photo Choctawhatchee High School student Megan Whitehurst (center) , was named The Jeff Newell Outstanding Reporter, winning a $1,000 scholarship. Jeff Newell was a reporter for the Northwest Florida Daily News, who in 1989 answered the call of local journalism teachers to start a scholastic journalism awards program. Newell was instrumental in the success of the program until his death from cancer in July 2001. An accomplished reporter, Newell was known for his dedication to his craft as well as his skills as a reporter. The scholarship is courtesy of Marylaide G. Newell, Jeff’s mother (right). Jeff’s brother, Mark, is on the left.

Shown in the photo on the right is Tia Thigpen, Choctawhatchee High School, who received the Outstanding High School Print Editor Award and a $500 scholarship.
